The archaeological heritage kept under the belvedere steps of the commercial port of Porto Torres will be accessible to the public for the first time. A vast area discovered ten years ago, which brought to light the ancient Roman port of Turris Libisonis, a site that connects the quay of the southern pier with the "Nino Pala" maritime station.
An archaeological treasure being investigated by the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage destined to be valorised thanks to an allocation of 550 thousand euros budgeted by the Port Authority.
The occasion to make the site usable will be the exhibition "Migration and Earthman" by the Turritan artist Odo Tinteri which, with the authorization of the Port System Authority, will be inaugurated on 8 August in the evocative place discovered during the construction works of the steps access to the maritime station. The works will be displayed on the exposed concrete walls according to a narrative order and each with its own supporting caption.
«During the excavation works and the demolition of the old quays, archaeological investigations were carried out in the area on the indication of the archaeologist Antonietta Boninu - explains Franco Satta, president of the council and official of the Superintendency - which brought out the structures of the 'ancient Roman port and the nineteenth-century port, as well as a building with mosaic and still active spring water wells, which served to guarantee the water supply of the ships". The redevelopment project of the site, drawn up by the architect Giovanni Macciocco, which is nearing completion, involves the construction of a museum area accessible to the public.
