"Non-binding expression of interest for the acquisition of Cagliari Calcio, including all rights to build a stadium and all related services." This is the subject of the letter sent to the Sardinian club's president, Tommaso Giulini—and copy-copyed to the newspapers—by Ekn Development Group, a development company based in Newport Beach, California, with offices in Bergamo, Italy.
The EKN group has expressed interest in acquiring Cagliari Calcio "along with all the rights to build a complete sports village."
"We kindly request any relevant information you can provide to allow us to properly evaluate this opportunity," concludes the American company founded by Ebbie Khan Nakhjavani. Ekn Development, as stated on its website, is a visionary investment and development firm specializing in hospitality and mixed-use real estate.
Aside from the unusual nature of the email—a purchase proposal from a Serie A club— Cagliari don't seem to give the matter much weight: the club has stated that it's one of many letters with the same subject line received in recent months.
Even though this is a far cry from the fabrication involving Luca Silvestrone, who, during the transition between Massimo Cellino and Tommaso Giulini, claimed to represent an American fund poised to conquer the red and blue colors, it was a gigantic hoax, and at the end of last May, Silvestrone ended up in prison serving a series of sentences for property crimes.
