They never spoke of robberies or targets, much less armored vehicles to be robbed or loads of gold to be carried off, but—at least according to the District Anti-Mafia Directorate's hypothesis—they allegedly used terms like "doing a job" or "picking up the children from daycare." This unconventional and cryptic vocabulary, according to police investigators, is how the alleged gang of robbers attempted to rob an armored van carrying 30 kilos of gold bars produced at the Portovesme srl foundry in San Gavino Monreale and headed to Arezzo. The robbery was planned starting on May 7th and was foiled only after the police raid that resulted in the arrests.
The precautionary order
The use of a cryptic language, almost in code, is what emerges from the 105 pages of the precautionary custody order signed by judge Elisabetta Patrito which brought to prison Giancarlo Bassu (51 years old from Pabillonis), Gian Michele Cadau (56, from Fonni), Francesco Carta (50, from Olbia), Stefano Falconi (41, from Fonni), Luca Montanari (54, from San Gavino Monreale) and the fellow townsman Luigi Antonio Mulvoni (37), nephew of Roberto Mario Mulvoni from Desulese (62), and then Adriano Nono Poddie (51, from Fonni), Salvatore Domenico Stochino (42, from Arzana), Riccardo Sulis (27, from Villanova Tulo).
Raffaele Loddo (32, from Fonni), who has not yet been located, was also the recipient of a pre-trial detention order. Other individuals, whose whereabouts are currently being investigated by the Prosecutor's Office, were also arrested in the police operation dubbed "Golden Mole."
The Flying Squad investigation, coordinated by director Davide Carboni, suggests it has also identified the mole inside the gold foundry: Luca Montanari, who allegedly provided his alleged accomplices with information crucial to organizing the robbery.
