Fifty years of history and a new challenge to face on the field. Amatori Rugby Capoterra has unveiled its 2026/2027 season, marking its fiftieth anniversary, with the first team ready to compete in the National Serie B Championship. The debut is scheduled for Sunday, October 18th, away against Fiamme Oro.

The oval returns to Capoterra, and it does so in a special year. From 1976 to 2026, ASD Amatori Rugby Capoterra has celebrated its 50th anniversary. The club officially opened the new season on Saturday, September 26th, with Open Day 2026.

A day dedicated to sport and socializing, designed not only for the club's athletes, but also for families, boys and girls, and anyone who wants to get into rugby.

From youth activities to the presentation of the first team

The program began in the afternoon with Rugby Tots, a physical activity for younger children aged 2 to 5. The field then hosted the various youth categories, from Under 6 to Under 18.

The highlight of the day came at 7 pm with the official presentation of the 2026/2027 season, also streamed live on Directa Sport's YouTube channel.

The ceremony was opened by Amatori Rugby Capoterra President Andrea Cogoni and Councilor for Sport Giovanni Montis. This was followed by a speech by President of the Sardinian Regional Committee Gianni Atzori, who also brought greetings from the Italian Rugby Federation.

The spotlight then turned to new sporting director Gabriele Ambus, who presented the sporting plan for the new season. The youth sector was presented by head Franco Atzori, who outlined the work being done by the Giallorossi youth system.

Attention also to Paralympic rugby

During the evening, the Paralympic section of the company was also presented, with a speech by Nicola Marcello and the participation of some athletes.

Among them was Alessandro Cicu, two-time Italian champion at the Italian Paralympic Athletics Championships.

Then it was the turn of the cadet team, introduced by coach Mario Gutierrez, before arriving at the most anticipated moment of the evening: the presentation of the first team that will face the next Serie B championship.

Head coach Marcello Garau will lead the team. One by one, all the players took the stage in front of the crowd, accompanied by captains Lorenzo Celembrini and Mattia Aru.

Half a century of rugby

Making the evening even more meaningful was the presence of Shardana Old Rugby Capoterra, the protagonists of an event designed to bring together different generations of the club.

Various generations of Amatori Rugby Capoterra gathered together to celebrate the club's fifty-year history, before the traditional third half and DJ set that concluded the Open Day.

The Serie B championship

Attention now turns to the pitch. The Serie B national championship will kick off on Sunday, October 18, 2026, with Capoterra drawn in Group 5, which includes teams from Lazio and Abruzzo.

The Giallorossi's debut will be challenging right from the start: they will be called upon to travel to Fiamme Oro, one of the leading teams in the group.

For Capoterra, this will be an important match, officially opening the fiftieth anniversary season and putting Marcello Garau's team to the test from day one.
