In view of February 21, International Mother Language Day, the deputy mayor and councilor for language policies, Francesco Marinaro, wrote a letter to school principals asking them to involve students in a reflection on the importance of language and cultural content.

«On the occasion of this day, it would be appreciated to plan initiatives in the classrooms aimed at promoting the conservation of the Catalan of Alghero» , adds Marinaro.

The president of the Civic Consultation for Linguistic Policies, Gavino Balata, also addresses the city schools on behalf of the cultural associations of Alghero that dedicate energy and time to the diffusion and protection of the Catalan of Alghero. "We are very sensitive to this issue and we would like to invite you to dedicate some of your time to discuss, inform yourselves, express curiosity, read a story, a poem, watch a film in our language: in a word, we would like you to bring it to life in your classrooms".

"Our language - Balata points out - although it is protected by national and regional laws, as well as by the Constitution, is living in a difficult period and will not be able to strengthen or have a future if the new generations forget it. While waiting for a homogeneous application of the laws designed to guarantee a future for the Algherese, finally managing to activate the teaching of our languages in schools, the responsibility of safeguarding this treasure falls on society and families. It falls on all of us! ", Balata concludes.
