Alghero: farewell to Gianvittorio Vacca, multifaceted "shop man"

Gianvittorio Vacca , extraordinary artist, coral craftsman, sculptor, ceramist, interior decorator, set designer and inventor of the social life of Alghero in the 1960s, passed away at the age of 86.
Gianvittorio was born in Alghero in 1936 but lived in Cagliari for over thirty years. He had recently returned to his hometown with many ideas and projects. But the artistic career of one of the island's most multifaceted masters stopped in the Medicine department of the Civil hospital, where he had been hospitalized for a few days.
The news of his death deeply moved the entire community of Alghero where Gianvittorio Vacca was esteemed and well-liked.
"I never tried to be celebrated as an artist - he said - at most I tried to be appreciated as a man of the shop . I have always had very popular aspirations, first of all that of seeing my painting, a drawing, a sculpture in the home of every Sardinian as you see a leppa or a carpet ".
The funeral will take place on Friday 28 October at 3.30 pm in the Cathedral of Santa Maria.
