“A square for Europe”, 400 people in Cagliari: «Here to defend peace and democracy»
But the protest of the permanent Garrison of the Sardinian people also takes place: «We repudiate war»Four hundred demonstrators for sure. Maybe even a little more. Cagliari responded to the appeal of Michele Serra and the newspaper La Repubblica. “ A square for Europe” also took shape in the Sardinian capital, from 3 pm. Many politicians, many under 50 and very few young people. The permanent garrison of the Sardinian people boycotted the event with the slogans “I repudiate war”, because «the Brussels plan takes away 800 million from health and services to rearm the Old Continent». At 5 pm the second demonstration began under the Bastion.
In Cagliari, the first call to "defend European values" occupied Piazza del Carmine. Mayor Massimo Zedda was not the first to speak, but more than anyone else he went into detail about Sardinian participation in the demonstration. "Together with our colleagues from the Metropolitan City, we were among the first to join Michele Serra's appeal. The future cannot be built with duties, scowling looks and opposition. We want Spinelli's Europe, the free and united Europe of the Ventotene manifesto."
There were, to name a few, the Progressisti with the deputy Francesco Ghirra and the regional councilor Francesco Agus . There were retired magistrates like Mauro Mura and Gian Giacomo Pisotti. There were many Pd. The regional secretary Piero Comandini , who is also president of the highest Sardinian assembly, spoke for all the Dems. "We are not willing to question peace," he said, "a value that seemed carved in stone. But evidently this is not the case, because we are called to mobilize."
The demonstration in Cagliari was organized by Valentina Usai . The 5pm picket under the Bastione was promoted by the Costituente Terra movement. In Piazza del Carmine it ended with the equally peaceful protest of the Permanent Picket of the Sardinian People: hands painted red, as if they were bloodied, and the writing, letter by letter, black on a yellow background, "I repudiate war". Davide Fadda, one of the protesters, said: "This is not the Europe we want" .
