The fire started on the stovetop in the kitchen of Daniel Loddo's home, on Via Trento, in the heart of Assemini.

The first person to notice the fire and smoke was a twelve-year-old girl who lives nearby with her mother.

The little girl immediately realized that she wouldn't be able to get into the apartment. She was alone at the time because her mother had gone shopping, so she decided to go downstairs and raise the alarm.

Those were moments of great fear on Saturday evening. But all's well that ends well: within minutes, two Civil Protection volunteers from the "Orsa Operations Unit," Alessandro Deidda and Ligita Jasudaite, who live on the same street and heard the little girl's screams, rushed to the scene and broke into Loddo's apartment. The man was lying on the floor, unconscious: "We grabbed the fire extinguisher and, as we were taught in the high-risk firefighting course, we pointed it straight at the flames."

The fire had already consumed the hob, sink and part of the furniture : «Luckily the gas cylinder wasn't under the kitchen».
