On November 21st at 3:30 pm, the Fondazione di Sardegna, located at Via Carlo Alberto 7 in Sassari, will host the initiative entitled “ The Gramscian Workshop and the Workshop of Enlightenment, in Memory of Gianni Francioni ,” a moment of remembrance and tribute to the illustrious scholar from Sassari who passed away last May.

The event is promoted by colleagues and friends who wanted to honor Gianni Francioni in his hometown, thanks to the support of the Fondazione di Sardegna and the patronage of the Municipality of Sassari . Participating organizations include the Gramsci Foundation in Rome —promoter of the National Edition of Antonio Gramsci's writings from the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia—the Department of Humanistic Studies at the University of Pavia (where Gianni Francioni was Professor Emeritus of History of Philosophy), and the Casa Gramsci Foundation , of which Gianni Francioni served as vice president, scientific director, and creator of the "Ghilarza Summer School." Organizational support is provided by the Compagnia della Corte social cooperative.

Born in Sassari in 1950, Gianni Francioni has left a significant mark on the Italian and international academic and cultural landscape. A refined and original scholar of the Lombard Enlightenment (particularly Pietro Verri and Cesare Beccaria) and Gramsci's writings, he shed new light on the analysis and interpretation of these authors, becoming a privileged point of reference in Europe and around the world, even for new generations of researchers, whom he has always encouraged and stimulated. He has written essays, articles, and reports, edited critical editions, and promoted the cultural mission of the intellectual in our time by uniting scientific research to civic engagement. Among his honors, the prestigious "Antonio Feltrinelli Prize" for philosophical sciences awarded by the Accademia dei Lincei.

Two presentations are scheduled: the first by Giuseppe Cospito (University of Pavia), his student and colleague, who will discuss the Critical Edition of Gramsci's Notebooks and present the second volume of the Miscellaneous Notebooks (1929-1935), edited together with Gianni Francioni and Fabio Frosini; the second by Antonello Mattone (former professor at the University of Sassari), who will address studies on the 18th century and the national editions of the writings of Pietro Verri and Beccaria to which Gianni Francioni contributed or directed. These insights will be followed by contributions and testimonies from colleagues, classmates, and friends: Guido Melis (Director of the magazine "Le Carte e la Storia"), Giorgio Macciotta (former member of parliament, undersecretary of state , and president of the Casa Gramsci Foundation), Antonello Arru (former professor at the University of Cagliari), and family members: his brother Federico Francioni and his daughter Giulia Francioni .

The initiative is coordinated by Elisabetta Pilia , former director of the University Library System of the University of Sassari and regional councillor for public education and cultural heritage.
