There are almost 39 thousand entrepreneurs in Sardinia: a figure that grew by 0.1% between 2019 and 2021.

There is also an increase in female artisan enterprises, just under 5,900 units, which recorded an increase of 0.3% and which represent 15.2% of female productive realities.

Young artisan businesses run by women under 35 are also growing (657, + 15.2%) and those led by foreigners (235, + 11.1%).

These are the numbers of the dossier of the Studies Office of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna, which reworked the data from Infocamere between 2019 and 2021.

They are mainly active in the sectors of services to people (2,411 activities), catering (656), food (485) and clothing (212). Growth in the IT sector was very positive (156 and + 4%), while a negative sign came from the manufacturing sector (168 and -5.5%) and transport (140 and -3.4%).

"Being a woman-entrepreneur is very different from being an entrepreneur and is certainly much more complex in a business world that is not made for women - said Maria Amelia Lai, president of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna -, women bring in the company something different than male colleagues. The enhancement of gender within companies and trade associations represents an opportunity for growth also for the Sardinian economy ”.

“Women are increasingly setting up on their own, focusing on sectors that are often traditionally male - he continued -, thus debunking an outdated stereotype. Moreover, in a moment of crisis like the present one, women seem to react better than men also with regard to the dynamics of employment: against a negative national trend in male employment in recent years, equal to 4.8%, detects a 1.6% growth in female artisan employment between 2008 and 2012, right in the middle of the economic situation ".

To support this type of business, 40 million euros are coming from the government throughout Italy, a dowry assigned for 2021 and 2022 to the Fund for the support of female enterprises provided for by the Decree signed by the Ministry of Economic Development, in concert with the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry for Equal Opportunities.

"A measure more necessary than ever - underlined Lai -, despite the great capacity for resilience, female entrepreneurs have suffered greatly from the economic consequences of the pandemic crisis".

"The measures of the decree - he concluded - provide for facilitated access to economic resources, the lack of which is one of the main factors hindering women's initiatives, and can stimulate the entrepreneurial capacity of women, even those who have been affected by the pandemic expelled from the labor market ".
