2024 is a record year for domestic tourism. There are 29 million Italians ready to leave between June and September , for one or more trips. And Sardinia is among the most popular destinations.

This was revealed by the analysis of the Confcommercio Tourism Observatory , carried out in collaboration with Swg.

The expected average per capita expenditure is 750 euros in July, 910 euros in August - the month with the highest incidence of long holidays - and 760 euros in September. In June this value stood at 630 euros .

When asked where they will stay overnight while travelling, the sample's responses on the one hand identify the classic tourist accommodation facilities - hotels, holiday villages, campsites and resorts - which overall over 4 out of 10 Italians go to, of which over half are in hotels . On the other hand, they indicate second homes owned or hospitality with friends and relatives, chosen in 14% of cases, which become 17% for longer holidays. For B&Bs and short-term rentals, however, the preference appears more linked to the duration of the trip. The former are chosen in 22% of cases for short holidays, dropping to 13% for those of 7 days or more. For the latter the trend is exactly the opposite: it ranges from 9% for short breaks to 14% for longer holidays.

More than one Italian in two (58%) will take holidays only in Italy, 34% have chosen national destinations and across the border, the remaining 8 will take holidays only abroad .

Of the destinations chosen for travel between June and September, 24% will be seaside destinations, especially for longer holidays, where this preference reaches 39% of the indications expressed by the sample interviewed. For longer, seaside holidays, Sardinia and Puglia are the favorite destinations . Sicily, Emilia Romagna and Liguria are also popular. For the mountains, Trentino prevails, following Tuscany in short and medium-term trips.

Instead, turning our attention beyond the border, the panorama of European destinations continues to prevail, particularly usable in the summer, where the offer of Greece and Spain strongly catalyzes the attention of our compatriots with France following more distantly.

«The forecasts for tourism indicate the possibility of having the best numbers ever. Never before has the tourism sector been able to contribute to the necessary growth that our economy is still lacking. The fate of this 2024, which will end with a complicated budget maneuver, depends on the overall stability of employment, the reduction in inflation and the expected growth of tourism in all its forms", states the president of Confcommercio Carlo Sangalli .
