There are 15 in Italy, with data updated to February 16, mothers detained with 16 children in total in tow. And, of these (5 are Italian, 10 foreign), five are still accused.
Attention to the situation is called by the Minister of Justice, Marta Cartabia, during the hearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Children: "Our ideal destination - he said - is never more children in prison".
In the institute with attenuated custody for mothers in Lauro, in the Avellino area, there are as many as nine mothers. In the structure, the spaces have been renovated and, also with the contribution of the Federico II University of Naples, two-room apartments have been created that simulate a family environment as much as possible in order to reduce the trauma of the years spent in a prison.
Two other women are at the Icam di San Vittore, Milan; two in that of Turin; one at the ICAM in Venice Giudecca. Finally, in Cagliari there is the fifth institute with attenuated custody for mothers in Italy and currently does not host mothers with children.
Another woman with her son is serving her sentence in the Reggio Calabria prison, an unsecured facility.
Cartabia however underlined that in Italy the number of mothers with children in prison is decreasing: "Today it is almost a third compared to December 31, 2019, when there were 44 mothers with 48 minors".
