Giorgia Meloni confirmed her candidacy in the European elections and asked Italians to write her name on the ballot paper, using her first name, Giorgia.

The prime minister then takes the field with Fratelli d'Italia. But a question immediately arose: is it really possible to write only the name on the card? The answer is yes, the law provides for it, the "favor votes" principle applies. It means that the validity of the vote expressed by the voter must always be admitted, during the counting phase, when it is possible to deduce - without doubt - the actual will of the citizen.

This was also confirmed yesterday by the Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida: «In elections of all types there is the possibility of giving the voter the choice whether to put the name in full or simplify it when it is clarified during the presentation of the candidacy as the name is replaceable. It happens in all elections, so it will say "Giorgia Meloni known as Giorgia". It is a possibility that the law gives precisely to simplify the concept."

But it is not the only case in history. Previously, for example, there was Marco Pannella who on the ballot paper was "Giacinto Pannella known as Marco". And, again, the mayor of Milan, who appeared as "Giuseppe Sala known as Beppe".
