Fires, a hellish day in Sardinia: the devastation toll
Over 40 fires have been recorded at the regional level: aircraft are flying across the island

A complete emergency is underway across Sardinia due to the fires that broke out today, following yesterday's hellish Sunday with the devastation at Punta Molentis . Forty-two fires were reported regionally on this last Monday of July, 13 of which required aerial intervention, with 25 interventions still underway by firefighters as of late afternoon for forest and vegetation fires. The situation is most complicated in the Nuoro area, where 11 active emergency calls have been received.
Among the main ones, a violent fire broke out this afternoon in Bacu Abis, a hamlet of Carbonia, just steps from homes . In addition to the massive emergency response effort, local residents also joined in, helping with irrigation systems for their homes . Four helicopters were on site: two from the Forestry Corps, which took off from Pula and Fenosu (Super Puma), an Air Force helicopter from Decimomannu, and an Army helicopter, as well as a Canadair helicopter from Ciampino.
The large fire that engulfed the Orosei countryside this morning, in the Sos Alinos area , is under control. As a precaution, several dozen homes—about 60—threatened by the flames had to be evacuated . Cleanup efforts are also underway in Giave, in the Sassari province, where a Canadair plane arrived from Ciampino to put out the fire.
The fires in Osilo-Codrongianos, with one farmer injured , and Borore are still active . In the first case, firefighting operations are being coordinated by personnel from the Ploaghe station, with helicopters from Fenosu (Super Puma) and Limbara, plus two Canadairs from Olbia, three firefighting teams from Sassari and Alghero, eight from the Forestas Agency, one Osilo-Avpc Osilense volunteer, and two Barracelli teams from Muros and Ossi. In the second case, the Forestry Corps of Macomer is coordinating, with the assistance of the Bolotana station. The helicopters here took off from Bosa and Anela, with a Canadair from Ciampino, four Forestas teams, Barracelli, and volunteers.
In Cardedu, the large fire licked the fences of several resorts : the parking lots were cleared . A jet of water from a helicopter hit and injured a firefighter fighting the flames . A fire is also underway in Jerzu, in the Trudori area, with the use of two helicopters from Villasalto and Alà dei Sardi (Super Puma).
The fires that broke out in Villacidro (Cabriolo, one helicopter), Pattada (Rui de Bantine, one helicopter), Tortolì (C. Pili, one helicopter), Villasimius (Riu Trottu, helicopters arrived from Pula), Cardedu (Cuccuru Costa Iba, three helicopters) and Bosa (Santa Giusta, one helicopter) also required the intervention of air resources.
Ground teams and air vehicles are at work, with the criticality of the situation leading to the arrival of two Canadairs from Rome in the afternoon .
