The Punta Molentis disaster: everything burned to ashes in minutes: "Arson"
Villasimius Mayor Gianluca Dessì is certain: a criminal act was behind the fire. The owner of the destroyed kiosk: "I looked at the flames and cried."Video di Mariella Careddu
If you count the hectares, 100 have burned to the ground. Add to that the cars, transformed into smoking hulks: a heartbreak for dozens and dozens of owners whose only responsibility is having decided to spend a day at the beach. But at Punta Molentis, the traditional "damage assessment" cannot be done by adding together the individual properties destroyed by the fire. There's only one way to define what has happened to the pearl of Sarrabus, to its environment, to its image: a disaster.
"In my opinion, it's deliberate," says Villasimius mayor Gianluca Dessì with some certainty. He wants a reaction: "We're ready to start over in the best possible way."
Giorgio Tolomei, owner of the L'Oleandro bar, will also have to try: nothing remains of his business. "I lost everything in ten minutes. There's nothing left, but we're confident. An employee was in danger, but we're all fine."
Tolomei saw the flames engulf everything: "An indescribable pain," the entrepreneur explains, "when I saw the flames I cried for an hour."
"Nature has been violated," adds Sergio Ghiani, president of the Villasimius tourist consortium, while behind him the landscape is dominated by the smoking skeletons of destroyed plants. "We offer culture and hospitality, we have no industry. And this is damaging to the image of all of Sardinia."
