«There are missing documents in Manuela's case file and neither the Prosecutor's Office nor the Police Headquarters are able to say where they have ended up» .

This is according to lawyer Giulia Lai , who together with her colleague Bachisio Mele represents the family of Manuela Murgia, the 16-year-old girl found dead on 5 February 1995 in the Tuvixeddu canyon in Cagliari.

A case filed at the time as suicide , a theory that the family never believed: in the eyes of her loved ones, Manuela was killed .

The lawyers had therefore filed a request to reopen the investigation, but in August the request was rejected . Now, also in light of the alleged disappearance in the Court of Cagliari of the documents of the investigation that led, from an innocent man, to the suicide in prison of Aldo Scardella , Manuela's family and the lawyers report their case.

"What immediately struck me as anomalous, when in October 2023 I made the first request for access to the documents - lawyer Lai told ANSA - was that there were not in the investigation file a whole series of documents that had necessarily been drawn up, such as the reports of searches and seizures as well as of subjects interviewed for summary information at the time of the facts". "Therefore - continues Lai - I made a specific request asking both the Prosecutor's Office and the Police Headquarters to provide the entire file as well as the crime evidence, starting with the victim's clothing, and the seized items, such as the diary and the objects found at the place where the body was found. Unfortunately, however, the response was not positive and neither the Prosecutor's Office nor the Police Headquarters is able to say where they ended up ".

In its response to the request, the Prosecutor's Office stressed that the "clothes worn by the victim, as no specific data is found in the documents, appear highly likely to have been kept for some time" and subsequently "were lost, or their destruction was in some way authorised".

As for the documents relating to the person under investigation, "it is not possible to add anything to what appears in the file as recovered from the archive".
