The fire started on Sunday evening, around 6:30 pm, in the port area of Porto Torres could have had much more serious consequences.

The local fire department team responded to the cruise terminal construction site on Via Cristoforo Colombo, where a group of youths had allegedly set fire to a container. When the firefighters arrived, the blaze had already spread so violently that it had reduced the structure containing some waste to ashes.

During the extinguishing process, the operators removed some gas cylinders stored in the module, which were at risk of being reached by the fire. The operation concluded after about an hour without any injuries. Coast Guard officers and Carabinieri officers from the local company also responded to the scene.

The Cruise Terminal, unfinished for 15 years, continues to be the target of vandalism and controversy . The chairman of the Chamber of Deputies' Transport Committee also spoke out regarding the so-called Lunardi Terminal, reassuring Porto Torres Mayor Massimo Mulas of the firm's desire to continue with the work and complete the unfinished project, considered one of the oldest infrastructure projects. The contract was supposed to be awarded last year.
