The Sardinia Region and the mayors of the municipalities involved reiterate their rejection of the idea of hosting the single national repository for nuclear waste.
After the start of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) procedure to identify the site, Environment Councillor Rosanna Laconi called an urgent meeting to discuss the information to be included in the Environmental Report.
The mayors of the municipalities involved in the eight areas identified as potential and suitable locations ( Albagiara, Assolo, Usellus in Oristanese, Mandas, Siurgus Donigala, Segariu, Villamar, Setzu, Tuili, Turri, Ussaramanna, Nurri, Ortacesus and Guasila ) participated, as did the directorates of the Departments of the Environment, Health, Agriculture, Urban Planning, Industry, Adis and Arpas.
"I acted promptly, involving the mayors and competent departments, so that the unanimous sentiment of opposition to the idea of hosting the nuclear waste repository in Sardinia clearly emerged," Laconi declared, underlining the urgency of a coordinated and compact response.
Sardinia, it was unanimously underlined, must be excluded from any hypothesis. For at least five reasons .
- Maritime transport : the logistical complexities in the transport of waste, with the need to adapt port infrastructures and the high risks for the marine and coastal environment
- Insufficient infrastructure : the rail and road network is inadequate to manage the transport of radioactive material, which aggravates logistical and environmental risks
- Environmental and cultural values : the areas involved are characterised by a rich biodiversity and an invaluable archaeological and landscape heritage, which would be compromised
- Ideogeological risks : the presence of interconnected reservoirs for water supply makes the territory particularly vulnerable to possible accidents, with the risk of contamination of the entire regional water system
- Agricultural production of excellence : the identified areas fall within territorial areas including large zones intended for DOP/IGP production of economic and identity importance for the Region
To all this it should be added that the areas identified on the Island fall within the B suitability band, therefore they are less suitable than the A1 and A2 band areas found in the rest of Italy. This document will be integrated with the observations and collaboration of all the subjects involved in the meeting.
"Sardinia strongly reiterates its no, as already expressed by the regional council in 2021 and strengthened by the motion approved last December 3", underlines Laconi, recalling that the Region "represents the unanimous sentiment of the Sardinians, already expressed in the 2011 referendum, with 97% of voters against any nuclear installation".
" We will not retreat one millimeter. The defense of our land, our communities and our future is an absolute priority ," concludes the councilor.
