Maria Pia Polato, an 83-year-old woman confined to bed due to serious illnesses, died after 21 days of agony. She was stabbed by her son on October 5th .

Admitted to the “Nostra Signora di Bonaria” hospital in San Gavino, she died late this morning.

Last October 5th the terrible episode hit the news : Pier Luigi Mura, a 62-year-old unemployed man, at the height of a violent argument over financial issues in their home in Guspini, took a kitchen knife and seriously injured his mother in the face .

The Carabinieri arrived immediately on the scene because the woman had asked for help, reporting her son's increasingly unstable and dangerous behavior .

But it was already too late. The elderly woman, rescued by 118 and taken to the Santissima Trinità hospital in Cagliari for initial treatment, was later transferred to San Gavino. Her condition never improved until her death today.

The son, already arrested the same evening as the stabbing, is being held in Uta prison for attempted murder. His situation is now more serious : if the death is directly related to the stabbing (medical records have been seized for this purpose), the charge will inevitably be upgraded to murder.
