From today the Regions will receive, with distribution by the commissioner structure directed by General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, the anti-Covid pill from Merck. For its prescription, the use of a monitoring register is envisaged, which will be accessible online on the Agency's website.
On December 22, the Italian Medicines Agency gave the green light to two antivirals, molnupiravir and remdesivir, for the treatment of non-hospitalized patients, with mild-to-moderate disease that occurred a few days ago and in the presence of clinical conditions that represent specific risk factors for the development of severe disease.
Molnupiravir is the one in distribution from today: its use is indicated within 5 days from the onset of symptoms. The duration of treatment, which consists of taking 4 tablets (200 mg) twice a day, is 5 days.
As for remdesivir, it is an antiviral drug produced by the US pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, developed for the treatment of infections with Ebola and Marburg viruses. Following its discovery, other studies have been done to explore further applications of the antiviral profile, including that against the coronavirus.
