The general director of the Regional School Office for Campania has ordered the precautionary suspension of Stefano Addeo, the teacher at the "Medi" High School in Cicciano (NA) who threatened Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's daughter on Facebook. The decision, it is explained, was taken "to guarantee and protect the serenity of the school community" and will be valid until the disciplinary proceedings are concluded in "compliance with the procedure provided for by law".
Addeo, 65, yesterday ingested a mix of psychotropic drugs with the intent of taking his own life. "I couldn't stand all the media fury that was directed at me," he told ANSA on the phone. "An hour ago I tried to commit suicide with a mix of psychotropic drugs. I made a mistake, but I shouldn't have been crucified like this, they lynched me. I apologized, I couldn't take it ." He was saved by the Carabinieri and the 118 doctors, alerted by the headmistress of the school where he teaches, who took him to the hospital in Nola: here he was admitted with a red code but his life is not in danger.
Addeo had entrusted an open letter to the newspaper 'Roma' with the request for a clarifying meeting with the prime minister, to renew his apologies: «I ask you, if possible, to be able to meet her so I can tell her this by looking her in the eyes», he wrote. Words that would have been collected at Palazzo Chigi: in fact, the prime minister, according to what has been learned, had given instructions to send her availability for a meeting, before the news of the suicide attempt came out. «There is no possible justification for the words written. I take full responsibility - Addeo had written in the letter to Meloni - even if I confess that I never intended to wish death on a little girl. It was an unfortunate, inadequate, unacceptable phrase, which does not represent me as a man or as an educator». Addeo speaks of his personal situation, of the relationship with his elderly mother and of the suffering for what happened: « I know well that nothing can erase the harm done with those words. Only truth, repentance and respect can help, now ». For this reason, the teacher directly addresses the Prime Minister, asking for forgiveness for the gesture "which has hurt you and your family, and in particular your daughter, who should never have been brought into this in any way".
"We can no longer tolerate the behavior of individuals who, on social media or in public, betray the decorum and dignity that must characterize such a delicate profession," said Minister Giuseppe Valditara. "The ministry," he added, "will sanction those who are not worthy of being part of our school." Valditara's voice was joined by the director of the Campania Region School Office, Ettore Acerra, who is responsible for the disciplinary action. "A disconcerting episode and a sign of how an unspeakable use of social media can lead to episodes that should absolutely not be acceptable."
