They were meditating when the waves washed over them. So 10 people died on Payangan beach in Java, Indonesia, while another 12 were rescued and one man is missing.
"They were too close to the sea - said the local police chief, Hery Purnomo - and they could not escape when the tide rose". The victims were participating in a ritual at the unspecified time and about which the guru who led the practice will be questioned.
The beach where the tragedy occurred is usually closed and monitored at night but the group somehow managed to enter despite the authorities' warning about the risk of high tide.
