Polls opened this morning for the elections organized by the military junta in Myanmar . According to local international media reports, the head of the military junta has already cast his vote.

This is the first time Myanmar has gone to the polls since the military coup five years ago . However, few believe in the election, and the UN and several countries perceive it as a tool used by the ruling regime to legitimize its government.

The vote, which will take place in phases, zone by zone for security reasons, until January 25, is under strict military control. All democratic parties have been dissolved.

The elections are "free and fair," declared the leader of the military junta, Min Aung Hlaing. "We guarantee," he said, "that these are free and fair elections. They are organized by the military; we cannot allow our name to be tarnished."
