Alessandra Todde defends the Director General of Health, Thomas Schael . She did so in her speech in the Chamber on the proposed regional plan for human services for 2026-2028, which was subsequently approved with 32 votes in favor (20 abstentions).
"The president of my party has been investigated for the management of Covid," the governor explained. "That's why being investigated is an issue that must be handled in chambers other than these. I firmly believe in the separation of powers, and I think the judiciary should be directed outside these chambers ."
As for the letters Schael sent to the general directors of the local health authorities : "In the relationship between the department, the general directors, and the Director General of Health, everyone has roles, responsibilities, and duties. And if the department passes a resolution on April 4th that addresses emergency rooms—we all know about the problems faced this summer with the end of the payroll deductions—and sets guidelines, it's the duty of the Director General of Health to demand that these guidelines be implemented, to monitor them, and it will be my duty to verify. This isn't a threat, but rather to say that we're all being monitored, everyone must do their part, and no one can be exempt, especially when it comes to the health of Sardinians."
It was Fausto Piga (Deputy Group Leader of the Italian Democratic Party) who urged a discussion about Schael at the beginning of the session: "Todde should say if he's under investigation. We're not asking for his resignation, we expect it." The councilor also asked for clarity "on the general directors' mess. The Massazza case is just the tip of the iceberg. Further rulings are expected that could cause a real management upheaval related to the appointment of local health authorities (ASL) that were later rejected by the Constitutional Court." During the session, Todde also secured the full support of the Democratic Party , the majority party in the Campo Largo district. Group leader Roberto Deriu, in fact, reinforced the interim position: "Having the regional president lead such an important department at this time is an advantage for Sardinia."
