Every march, even the longest, begins with one step. And the first step in the march towards salvation, hopefully, of Cagliari concerns the defense. Because those 40 goals collected in 19 games are one of the symbols of the disastrous first round of the rossoblùs, as well as the second worst roadmap in the 20-team championships. Back there, almost everything changes. Via Diego Godin and Martin Caceres, who in Uruguay are waiting to write their future away from Sardinia, here is Matteo Lovato, who landed last night in Elmas, while Edoardo Goldaniga and Riccardo Calafiori await.

I start again from three

Three, like the defensive line on which Mazzarri wants to insist. After wandering between different game systems, the coach from San Vincenzo aims decidedly on that 3-4-2-1 that he has repeatedly remembered to be his trademark. A three-man defense, therefore. The post-Udinese purge canceled the 69 years (and 4.5 million net wages) of the two Uruguayans Godin (11 appearances so far) and Caceres (14). Lower than high until the match against Udinese, the straw that broke the camel's back, with the outburst of sporting director Capozucca, while Mazzarri, in Turin, preferred to give a technical explanation. Also because Godin and Caceres, if the situation does not unblock, risk finding themselves in Asseminello in early January, as they are still players registered for Cagliari.

New faces

Via Godin and Caceres, Walukiewicz out for the rest of the season (hip surgery), with Altare who could go to B, Mazzarri finds himself with only Ceppitelli, Carboni and the young Slovak Obert. The first reinforcement is Lovato, born in 2000, arriving on loan from Atalanta (6 league appearances this year). The young defender, formerly of Verona, arrived last night in Elmas and was immediately taken to Asseminello, where he underwent a swab with his teammates, while today for him medical examinations, and then began to train under Mazzarri's orders. All with the permission of Atalanta, given that the operation can only be formalized from 3 January, the day of the official start of the transfer market. Little is missing also for Goldaniga from Sassuolo, this time outright and at no cost, with a bonus to be paid to the Emilians in case of salvation. The relaunch of Parma, which would have proposed a contract higher than that offered by Cagliari, is of no concern. It also seems certain that Calafiori has arrived from Rome, still on loan. The Giallorossi club awaits Vina's return from Uruguay, before letting the left-handed winger leave class 2002. For a Cagliari that, with the arrivals of Calafiori and Lovato himself and the confirmations of Bellanova and Carboni, would find himself with four of the Nicolato's Under 21 team.

Not just defense

But Cagliari, despite the weight of the liquidity index which prevents costly purchases, is also looking to midfield, where the Baselli hypothesis, proposed by Turin, is evaluated. And pay attention to the attack, which for the whole of January will have to do without Keita, far from certain of his stay in the rossoblù.
