New rules for wild boar hunting, whose season in Sardinia opens tomorrow.

The Local Health Authorities, including that of Sassari, remind hunters and trade associations of them, which in a note recalls the rules «introduced by the provision of the European Commission which declared the African swine fever virus eradicated in the wild population of the island, going to eliminate almost all restrictions on hunting activity".

«Following the provision - explains the Local Health Authority - the Project Unit adopted a resolution authorizing wild boar hunting throughout the Region. In most of the regional territory, hunting will be carried out in an area free from restrictions due to African swine fever (ASF).

With the new provisions, restrictions remain in zone III which falls in some municipalities in the Nuoro and Ogliastra areas and some limitations in the buffer zone, defined as Zone I. As regards the province of Sassari, zone I concerns a part of the Goceano: Illorai, Bono, Bottida, Burgos, Esporlatu and Benetutti.

«With the exception of these areas, in the rest of Sardinia hunters will no longer have to conserve blood and store animal carcasses, but will simply have to deliver a spleen sample for virus research until the number programmed on a municipal basis is reached and a diaphragm sample for Trichinella research".

«This important result was achieved thanks to the work, which started in 2015, carried out in Sardinia by the project unit and which saw in action the staff of all the veterinary services of the zooprophylactic institute and the precious collaboration of the forestry and supervisory corps environmental. In this fundamental surveillance activity, hunters and their associations have proven to be formidable allies in the fight against the virus", concludes the note.
