A dramatic accident occurred this afternoon, around 5 p.m., on Provincial Road 44, a short distance from Fertilia airport.

A 17-year-old boy, Fabrizio Calaresu, from Alghero, who was riding a street motorcycle, lost his life after colliding with a car driven by Spanish tourists. In the violent impact, the young man was thrown several meters, crashing into a lamppost. He died instantly.

It appears that Calaresu was on his way to a local farm, where he had found work for the summer, and attempted to overtake just as a car was turning onto a side street. The circumstances, however, are still being investigated by law enforcement.

Local police officers, two 118 ambulances, the fire department, and the Carabinieri responded to the scene. The driver of the car involved, in shock, was reportedly unharmed.

Traffic was interrupted to allow for surveys and securing the area. The SP 44 road, the arterial road connecting Alghero to the Fertilia airport terminal, remained closed, causing serious traffic disruption. Vehicles were diverted to Sa Segada.

This tragedy has profoundly affected the Alghero community and has brought renewed attention to road safety, especially on the busiest and most dangerous stretches of road, such as the airport road, which has repeatedly been the scene of horrific accidents.
