A trachesstomy is needed to allow the 11-year-old boy to breathe after he was poisoned by botulism after eating a contaminated guacamole taco at Firesta Latina in Monserrato .
The decision was made by doctors in the pediatric intensive care unit at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where the boy was transferred by helicopter after a period of hospitalization at Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari, where he had been diagnosed with a serious illness linked to the ecotoxin released by the bacterium present in food.
Until now, the eleven-year-old has remained intubated and breathing through machines. But this condition, if prolonged, increases the risk of infection and makes feeding difficult. Surgery on his trachea, which is expected to be reversible, is scheduled for a few hours and could improve his condition. Meanwhile, we must wait to see what the neurological consequences of the poisoning will be: his condition did not worsen during his hospital stay in Rome. Unfortunately, it did not improve either.
