The minister: «Goodbye to coal in 2025, later only in Sardinia»

Decarbonization is imminent, but not for everyone. For the island it will take longer. «The objective of abandoning coal in the electricity generation mix starting from 31 December 2025 can certainly be confirmed for the entire national territory, with the exception of Sardinia, where it will be achievable between 2026 and 2028».
The Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, said this at a hearing before the Chamber's Environment Commission.
«The phase out of coal also required the planning of new gas replacement capacity», continued government representative Meloni, «between 2021 and 2023, 4 new high-efficiency gas combined cycle plants were authorized ( Tavazzano, Fusina, Ostiglia and Monfalcone), currently under construction, of approximately 850 Megawatts each, for a total power of 3400 MW. Furthermore, several upgrades of existing plants have been authorised, for a total additional available capacity of approximately 700 MW".
«With respect to the Pniec objective (3 GW of new gas plants), this is more than sufficient capacity», concluded the minister, «the entry into operation of this new replacement capacity, expected between 2024 and 2026 , will therefore allow us to reach the phase-out objective on the Continent." Sardinia excluded, therefore.
