The trial of Alba Veronica Puddu , the doctor of Tertenia accused of aggravated voluntary murder , circumvention of incapacity and fraud, continues in the Court of Assizes in Cagliari.
Today in the courtroom spoke Erica Caboi, the wife of Fiorenzo Fiorini, the 57-year-old who died after excruciating suffering due to an infiltrating fourth degree melanoma.
"After the treatment, the doctor told my husband that he was 'clean', but the tumor continued," the woman recalled.
Puddu, for the accusation, would in fact have treated patients suffering from tumors with alternative methods and, among these, ultrasounds. Treatments that, according to the Prosecutor's Office, would have produced no effect, on the contrary they would have reduced the life expectancy of the sick and accelerated death.
The first witnesses presented themselves before the court presided over by judge Tiziana Marogna, and among them Erica Caboi who told how her husband was convinced to follow the "treatment" of the accused, also renouncing the removal of a lymph node. Having formed a civil party with the lawyers Rita Dedola and Mauro Massa, she repeated that Alba Veronica Puddu would have given hope to her wife. Then the worsening of the conditions, hospitalization and death in a very short time.
During today's hearing there was also a twist because some of the meetings with the doctor, the ultrasound sessions every ten days, would have been taken by Fioroni's wife with her mobile phone. The judges ordered the footage to be captured.
On the witness stand, moreover, Maria Lucchesa Spanu, sister of Davide, who also died in 2017 after the treatment of the accused, accused in this case of circumvention of incapacity and fraud. He had colon cancer with liver metastases. "My brother underwent a first cycle of ultrasound for 15 days in a row, two hours a day costing 90 euros each - he explained - and during this treatment he slept in the room above the study which paid 20 euros a night". Alba Veronica Puddu, 51, was suspended two years ago by the Nuoro medical order. It is defended by lawyers Michele Zuddas and Nicola Andrea Oggiano, and today was not present in the courtroom.
The investigation in which she is involved started after an investigation by "Le Iene" broadcast on November 19, 2017 on Italia 1, in which cases of cancer patients were reported who had abandoned traditional therapies for those proposed by the defendant, who now faces life imprisonment.
Next hearing on December 16.
