Five fires in a month and a half . The flames had even threatened the homes of Marceddì, had licked the Corru S'Ittiri pond, destroying nearly 9,000 square meters of pine forest in the Torre Vecchia area between Terralba and Arborea. A 30-year-old man, originally from Terralba but resident in Luri, a hamlet of Arborea, was arrested yesterday for the five fires.

After investigations by the Forestry Corps , investigators concluded that the unemployed man (assisted by lawyer Fabio Costa) was responsible for the fires. The first was apparently started on July 16th, the others between late August and September 1st. The fire had attacked the pine trees in the Torre Vecchia area, threatening farms and rural homes as well as the seaside village of Marceddì.

Furthermore, the fires had been started on very hot days and with strong winds . On September 1st, in particular, the Civil Protection Department had issued a high-risk fire warning, with high temperatures and winds that could have hindered extinguishing operations. In light of all these factors, the investigating judge ordered the arrest with a precautionary custody order .
