The statue of the Madonna Nostra Signora di Bonaria stolen in January will be returned to the community of Terralba. The Carabinieri of Oristano will return it to the faithful tomorrow, Wednesday 21 August, during a mass in the church of San Pietro Apostolo.
The statue had disappeared from the glass case that contained it on the night of January 19 : about 60 centimeters tall, created by the artist Dina Pala, it had been donated to the community by a family of devotees. Some passers-by had reported the theft after noticing that the votive shrine on the east road that leads to the hamlet of Marceddì was empty. The glass had been broken and the statue of the Madonna taken away.
The news of the theft had caused great indignation in the community, especially among the fishermen of the area. It had been there for years and for everyone it had become a point of prayer, as well as a fixed stop in the procession for the feast of Marceddì in August. The investigations of the Carabinieri, coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office of Oristano, began immediately and after a few days, in an area not far from the case, the statue was found. But in terrible conditions : the seven recovered fragments were returned to the artist for restoration work. Investigative investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators of the theft.
