A large fire broke out between Siliqua and Musei, destroying numerous round bales of forage and causing traffic disruption on the Iglesias lane of State Road 130.
The flames started around 2 pm, from the roadside in front of the power plant in the rural area of Sebatzu, in the Siliqua section of Provincial Road 88.
The fire, fanned by the wind, quickly spread inside the plant and into the surrounding fields, where numerous round bales of fodder lay waiting to be collected. The fire extended for several kilometers, reaching State Road 130, where thick smoke obscured visibility for motorists. The rapid intervention of the Carbonia traffic police and the Carabinieri from the Domusnovas station was crucial, temporarily blocking the stretch of road to allow for firefighting operations.
Vehicles from the Forestry Corps, firefighters from the Iglesias detachment, and several teams of civil defense volunteers intervened to contain the flames . A team from the National Roads Authority (ANAS) also arrived to monitor safety on the highway.
In addition to the round bales, forage fields and small reforestation plots are in ashes. The extent and damage caused by the fire, including to the power plant's equipment, are not yet known. The cause of the blaze is still unclear, and arson has not been ruled out. Once the cleanup is complete, Forestry Corps investigators will begin an investigation to shed light on the origin of what appears to be the first major fire of the season in this area.
