The cyclist hit by a car on Via dell'Industria in Porto Torres is in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit of Sassari Civil Hospital.

The man, Gavino Petretto, 70, from Porto Torres, was struck around 8:20 a.m. while turning onto Via Verdi on his bike, after a day of training for an important triathlon event in Barcelona, scheduled for the next few days. Doctors diagnosed him with multiple internal injuries, including facial and spinal trauma. The prognosis is guarded.

According to initial reports, the 70-year-old was riding his racing bike along Via dell'Industria in the direction of the port when he entered Via Verdi at the intersection in front of McDonald's and was hit by a Volkswagen Golf coming from the industrial area, which was turning in the same direction.

The driver was a 37-year-old man from Porto Torres who apparently didn't see the cyclist, who was thrown violently onto the asphalt. Rescued by the driver of the car, the 70-year-old was first treated by 118 emergency medical workers, who responded with the Avis Campanedda ambulance and then with the Mike 2 emergency vehicle.

Transferred with a red code to the Santissima Annunziata hospital, he was still alert upon arrival.

Following their examinations, doctors determined the injured man was in serious condition and ordered his transfer to the intensive care unit. Carabinieri from the Porto Torres branch intervened to conduct investigations and determine the circumstances. Local police were also on site to monitor traffic.
