Sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of massacre. This was the sentence handed down in a court in Sassari, with a summary trial conditional on a psychiatric evaluation, for Antonio Maria Pani, the 64-year-old who, in April 2025 in Ozieri, turned on the gas in his apartment . He had first alerted 112 , claiming to have killed his wife, thus prompting the arrival of the Carabinieri.
They were the real target of the man who had sealed every crack to prevent the gas from escaping and was apparently ready to blow up the building while he was in the basement of the complex. The attempt failed, if that was his intention, and the Carabinieri officers who intervened under the command of Major Gabriele Tronca, commander of the Ozieri Company, managed to prevent the situation from becoming tragic.
Prosecutor Maria Paola Asara requested a 20-year prison sentence, asking that mitigating circumstances, given the defendant's medical conditions, be balanced against the aggravating ones. Preliminary hearing judge Gian Paolo Piana sentenced the man, represented by lawyer Antonella Chirigoni, to 15 years.
A few days before the episode described, Pani had been sentenced to 9 months for contempt, accused of damaging the commemorative plaque of Walter Frau, a carabiniere killed in Chilivani on 16 August 1995 in a firefight with some robbers in which the other soldier present, Ciriaco Carru, also lost his life.
