After a deliberation lasting just over three hours, the Assize Court of Nuoro presided over by Elena Meloni, alongside Luisa Rosetti, sentenced Salvatore Franceschi, a 59-year-old from Oliena to 18 years in prison for the murder of his mother Luigina Fois, an 88-year-old who died following the injuries sustained after her son's attack.

The man was not in the courtroom at the time the device was read. The sisters were present instead. The Court considered the generic mitigating circumstances to prevail over the aggravating circumstance of having committed the crime to the detriment of an ascendant .

The crime occurred on November 7, 2022 in the house in Oliena where the two lived together. After an argument , the man took an axe, reached his mother who was lying on the bed and hit her on the back of the head with the back of the weapon. Then he called for help. The woman, after ending up in a coma and subsequently transferred to an RSA in Padru, died two months later (January 2, 2023) as a result of those injuries .

Franceschi, defended by the lawyer Pasqualino Moi, a few days after the attack which he initially passed off as a domestic accident, was unmasked and confessed, in front of the prosecutor Riccardo Belfiori and the head of the Mobile team Fabio Di Lella, what at the time was still an attempted murder. A position which then worsened with the subsequent death of his elderly mother. The Prosecutor's Office had requested a 21-year prison sentence for the man .
