There is a case of Nile Fever also in the province of Cagliari : West Nile Disease was found on an elderly person over 75 years old. The infection - diagnosed in mid-September but so far never localized, for the public, in the territory of the capital - is added to those so far found only in the province of Oristano (another six in all, of which one lethal for a woman from Marrubiu hospitalized in Brotzu ).

The data is reported in the weekly bulletin of the Epicenter, the epidemiological center of the Higher Institute of Health, updated on 5 October.

CONDITIONS - At the moment it is not known whether the elderly person has been hospitalized or not. However, as we learn from the document , it was a neuro-invasive form of the disease, which involves even severe encephalitis.

Since June, there have been 31 deaths caused by Nile fever throughout Italy.

IN BIRDS - In Sardinia the presence of the virus has been confirmed in eight birds belonging to the target breeds (magpie, hooded crow and jay) and in a robin and a goshawk in the province of Oristano, a kestrel in the Nuorese area, a kestrel and a sparrow hawk in the Sassarese.

IN MOSQUITOES - Mosquitoes belonging to three pools identified in the Oristano (two) and Nuorese (one) also carry viruses.

TRANSFUSIONS - If the number of cases in the island remains low enough, although constantly increasing, there is a risk of serious repercussions on the transfusion system. The National Blood Center, an emanation of the Ministry of Health, has branded all the provinces of Sardinia as a red zone: anyone who has spent even one night there will not be able to donate for at least 28 days, unless they undergo a specific test for detection of the Nile fever virus. The map is updated to date.
