«We didn't see them, we heard shots from all sides. They had a Sardinian accent."

Marcello Lella, one of the security guards who were in the Mondialpol Lookout 2 in Caniga last June 28 , recounts the moments of the assault.

A dozen minutes of fear , including countless gunshots, the explosion of a charge to blow up an armored door and the vibrations of the jackhammer attached to the excavator which made the walls tremble.

«I was on duty in the counting room, the alarm was promptly heard by the operations center», says Lella, today in the square in Sassari with the unions, who proclaimed a day of strike and organized two sit ins. " When I went up from the vault I could hear gunshots from all sides, the vault was already closed and we did what we had to, making ourselves safe and then waiting for the police ."

The guards also managed to secure part of the money, which was thrown into one of the escape routes which was then hermetically sealed. And they didn't confront any of the criminals face to face . «We only heard gunshots and shots from the excavator which made the whole building shake. We heard some voices, it sounded like a Sardinian accent ."

The criminals, around twenty, are on the run with a loot worth around 10 million euros. For Marcello Lella it is the second experience of this kind, he was also in the institute during the 2016 robbery : «I think we need greater security and more protection at the end of the month . Controls and safeguards, but also further ways to defend ourselves."
