Four million euros to build the new detachment of the Mandas Fire Brigade. The good and long-awaited news was given to the mayor Umberto Oppus at the meeting with the general director of the Civil Protection Antonio Belloi held to discuss the initiatives and fire prevention programs in an area that has long paid a very high price to the madness of arsonists.

The money to build the new fire base was allocated by the Ministry of the Interior. "The goal is to start work in 2023 - says Mayor Oppus -, we will immediately commit ourselves to ensure that the allocated resources are spent without wasting time".

The Fire Brigade has been present in Mandas since 1998, but until 2018 only in the summer period. For four years now, thanks to the commitment and persistence of the municipal administrations that have succeeded each other in the country, the fixed detachment operating all year round has been present on the municipal territory. This is a defense considered essential for prevention and prompt intervention on a vast territory characterized by the presence of numerous small inhabited centers.

The new detachment will be equipped with more men and means to fight the fires. Just in Mandas a few days ago there was a fire, probably of a malicious nature, which destroyed over 400 hectares of pastures and Mediterranean scrub until it reached the area of Lake Mulargia, in the territory of Siurgus Donigala. The community of the village of the upper Trexenta relived the nightmare of two years ago, when a negligent fire had reduced 522 hectares of forest to ashes and another 522 hectares (a singular coincidence on the numbers) between non-wooded areas and bushy pastures.
