A neglected landfill, containing foul-smelling waste, was unearthed in the heart of the Tossilo industrial area and immediately seized by the local police, with the intervention of the Carabinieri, after reports from nearby businesses complained of the unbearable odor.
The material consists of approximately 2,500 tons of animal meal, stored for twenty years in an old 2,000-square-meter warehouse whose existence no one seemed to know about. The material was spread by a private company within the fence surrounding the warehouse. This operation generated the stench, triggering alarms and complaints from workers in the Tossilo industrial area, who notified law enforcement.
The Carabinieri and the Macomer Local Police responded to the scene, stopping the waste disposal operations and ordering the owner to move everything back inside the warehouse to prevent fumes from spreading into the surrounding area. Those responsible have been reported to the judicial authorities, but they must dispose of the material at their own expense.
The matter is being shrouded in secrecy. "We know that the recovered material is being assessed by the competent authorities," says Mario Zacchino, liquidator of the Industrial Consortium. "We know that the warehouse and the surrounding area were supposed to be put up for sale." The disposal of these materials costs around €500,000.
