After the alarm raised yesterday by Coldiretti , attention returns to the Blue Tongue emergency on the Island and to the need to plan targeted and effective interventions to prevent and contain a new proliferation of the disease on the territory.

And the one to shed light on the issue in the Regional Council is Emanuele Cera, of the Fratelli d'Italia group and vice president of the agriculture commission , who has sent a question to the competent Departments of Health, Agriculture and the Environment aimed at obtaining updates on the evolving situation.

The request, explains Cera, «follows the growing concern of Sardinian breeders and trade associations , but which, inevitably, also worries local administrators and health workers , who fear a new proliferation of the disease in the regional territory, with consequent serious economic and health damage».

Following the resurgence of the virus in recent years, and the damage to the island's livestock sector, Cera has called for "a careful analysis of the situation" and has addressed a series of specific questions to the various competent departments, ranging from the need to know the current health situation deriving from Bluetongue in Sardinia, to the preventive actions of serological surveillance planned and in progress; from the fight against larvae and widespread disinfestation , to the use of sentinel animals to anticipate the spread of the virus and prevent a repetition of last year's dramatic situation; from the creation of an inter-departmental structure in order to obtain a more timely and rapid management of the actions of prevention and contrast to the proliferation of Bluetongue, to the preventive planning of the 2025 vaccination campaign , with timely methods of supplying vaccines in order to act quickly and effectively; from the activation of collaboration protocols with the countries from which the disease originates, in order to identify the serotypes in advance and anticipate the spread of the virus on the Island, to the allocation of financial resources in favor of individual livestock farms, for the purchase of repellents capable of assisting and integrating the disinfestation action and the fight against the proliferation of vector insects, implemented by the competent Regional Department;

The councilor then expressed his concern about the lack of clear and timely information from the Region , underlining the need for urgent and coordinated interventions to prevent and contain the spread of Bluetongue in Sardinia. "It is no longer tolerable - he explains - that, faced with a cyclical phenomenon such as that of Bluetongue, which occurs every year, with outbreaks spread among companies throughout the island, the institutional response is limited to fragmented and insufficient interventions. Instead, it is essential that the Sardinia Region implements timely and coordinated actions to prevent a new spread of Bluetongue, which represents a concrete threat to our agricultural and pastoral economy. It is necessary to guarantee effective support, including economic, to breeders and prepare a strategic plan aimed at protecting animal health and containing the virus".
