«Even if this sentence will not give us back our parents, we have finally obtained justice. It was right that he remained in prison because he destroyed our family, our lives, but we will still move forward by making ourselves strong and taking care of Ilaria and her two children who unfortunately were unable to meet their grandparents."

With difficulty Mariella and Giusy Saladdino comment on the sentence that sentences Fulvio Baule to life imprisonment , the murderer who on 22 February two years ago, in Porto Torres, killed his in-laws, Basilio Saladdino and Liliana Mancusa, with an axe, right in front of the their home. With the same brutality he had attacked his ex-wife, Ilaria Saladdino, who returned home after a long rehabilitation. In the courtroom of the Assize Court, the twin sisters hug each other and hold back tears at the end of the reading of the device by judge Massimo Zaniboni.

A sentence issued at 1pm in front of the prosecutor, Enrica Angioni, who in her indictment had asked for life imprisonment. «We will try to move forward because we have to take care of Ilaria, our children and the twins who unfortunately were unable to meet their grandparents, they don't know how many sacrifices they made for them. They must be proud to be Saladin's grandchildren, as we are to be their daughters."

The Court of Assizes also sentenced Baule to daytime isolation for 1 year, perpetual disqualification from holding public office, the forfeiture of parental responsibility, as well as the payment of compensation to the families of the victims who had taken civil action, with the lawyers Silvia Ferraris and Gian Mario Solinas.

The lawyers have reconstructed the most dramatic moments of the tragedy, underlining the aspect of premeditation. “Baule never uttered a single word of repentance, bitterness or simple regret for what he had committed,” said the lawyer Solinas. The Court awarded his wife Ilaria Saladdino compensation of 250 thousand euros; 300 thousand euros to each of the couple's two children; 200 thousand to Maria Saladdino and 180 thousand to Giusy Saladdino; 60 thousand euros each to Basilio Saladdino's sisters, Maria and Silvestra, and Liliana Mancusa's brother, Marcello. Baule's defense lawyer, Nicola Lucchi, will evaluate the possibility of appealing after having read the reasons for the sentence.
