A report, requesting cleanup and the introduction of surveillance systems, was sent by the Legal Intervention Group to the Municipality of Sestu, the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, and the Forestry Department, to address the emergency of illegal landfills and the ongoing garbage fires in the surrounding countryside.

"The environmental and health situation is now quite serious," a statement reads. "The countryside is increasingly littered with uncontrolled waste dumping, often the target of fires with impunity."

We are talking about rubbish "of all kinds, construction debris, pieces of asbestos cement (eternit), household goods, packaging".

The abandonment and uncontrolled dumping of waste, as recalled by the Grig, are prohibited by Article 192 of Legislative Decree 152/2006 and subsequent amendments and additions: "The competent mayor shall issue an ordinance ordering the offender, jointly with the owner and the holder of real or personal rights over the area, to remove the waste and restore the environment. If the deadline expires without action, the municipal administration shall take action ex officio to the detriment of the obligated parties."

The presence of asbestos, then, requires significant procedures and precautions.
