The first green hydrogen production plant with a capacity that could potentially reach 200 Megawatts was born in the industrial complex of Porto Torres . The Provincial Industrial Consortium of Sassari gave the green light to the "H2 Porto Torres" project created by the Swiss company Smartenergy, which authorized the development, construction and operation of a green hydrogen production system for the recovery of industrial areas disused.

The Industrial Consortium is considered, by territorial extension and geographical position, among the most important managers of industrial areas in Italy.

"To help carry out the industrial reconversion and redevelopment project of the Porto Torres hub" underlines Valerio Scanu, president of Cipss "in recent years it has launched development policies to encourage the construction of photovoltaic systems on the ground aimed at the production of green hydrogen" .

This is the first hydrogen district in Northern Sardinia , an initiative supported by the consulting company Link Consulting Group which has already established relationships with local companies and stakeholders in the Province of Sassari. Further initiatives will then be undertaken with the local university and other key players in the area to create value and new job opportunities in Sardinia.

The project, in line with the 2030 targets for the decarbonisation and blending of green hydrogen in the gas network, will be developed in three phases (with a target capacity between 20Mwe and up to 200Mwe), with an estimated delivery date between 2026 and 2030. Smartenergy will start the authorization activities in the first half of 2023.
