INDICATIONS - But how is the drug used and what is it for? The AIFA indications provide for the use of Paxlovid "within five days of the onset of symptoms" and treatment with 3 tablets in the morning and 3 in the evening for a period of 5 days. It can be prescribed by the general practitioners, the USCAT, the 118 or the emergency rooms themselves and it will then be up to the patient to go and collect it at the hospital pharmacy and then continue the treatment at home.

Paxlovid is recommended for the treatment of Covid in adults with "mild to moderate disease" who do not need supplemental oxygen and who are at high risk of the disease becoming severe. Based on the studies considered by the EMA, Paxlovid showed a reduction in the risk of hospitalization or death of 89%, when administered within 3 days of the onset of symptoms, and 88% within five days.

The drug consists of an antiviral, Nirmatrelvir, and a potentiating drug, Ritonavir.

Pfizer's drug joins Merck's oral antiviral, the Lagevrio pill, with which 1,662 patients have already been treated.
