Over two and a half tons of marijuana were seized by the Guardia di Finanza in a large-scale operation conducted in recent days in the Fonni countryside.
The illegal plantation was discovered near the village's riding school , where a large-scale cultivation facility had been set up, with a sophisticated irrigation system and a motor for extracting water from the subsoil.
The operation, coordinated by the Nuoro Provincial Command in collaboration with the Cagliari Guardia di Finanza air force, concluded with the seizure of approximately 2,500 cannabis indica plants, already close to maturity.
Analyses conducted by the Customs and Monopolies Agency laboratory in Cagliari confirmed the high content of the active ingredient in the inflorescences, presumably destined for the illegal drug market.
According to investigators, the plantation was capable of generating mass drug production, in violation of Article 73 of the Consolidated Law on Narcotics, which punishes possession and cultivation for the purpose of dealing.
The particularly isolated area had been equipped with over 2 kilometers of irrigation pipes and a video surveillance system installed to control access to the crop.
The finance police, with the support of Forestas, proceeded to destroy the plants on site, as required by the memorandum of understanding promoted by the Prefecture of Nuoro.
The investigation, coordinated by the Nuoro Public Prosecutor's Office, is continuing to identify those responsible for the cultivation: at the moment, only one person is under investigation.
