We will probably start in a few days with the third doses of the anti-Covid vaccine on the island.

The Regional Health Department is defining the guidelines for the phase that will mainly involve the Aou of Cagliari and Sassari and Arnas Brotzu, but also the Ats says it is ready to start on this front.

About 20-25 thousand immunosuppressed people will receive an additional dose of Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccine. These are organ transplant recipients or hematopoietic stem cells within 2 years, people on immunosuppressive therapy to avoid organ transplant rejection, people awaiting transplantation or who have oncological diseases with immunosuppressive or myelo-suppressive drugs, suppressive immunodeficiency and immunodeficiencies secondary to drug treatment, people on dialysis and severe renal insufficiency, AIDS patients.

"We are talking about people with immune deficiency for whom it is necessary to bring the response level of the vaccine to that of other people - explains Gabriele Mereu, the head of the Epidemiology and Prophylaxis-Vaccine Prophylaxis Area of the Ats-Assl of Cagliari - how much this will affect the protection capacity of the Delta variant we will know over time, surely there will be more protection even if - remember - the protection is not only linked to circulating antibodies but also immunological memory ".

It is still unclear at the national level whether the third dose will be extended to the rest of the population.

THE NUMBERS - Meanwhile, Sardinia has reached 1,109,435 fully vaccinated (1,065,428 with double dose and 44,007 single dose), equal to 69.4% of the total population (about 1.6 million) and 86.8% of the over 12 vaccination coverage target. The administrations, on the other hand, reach 2,289,017 since the beginning of the campaign, that is 89% of the 2,571,988 delivered by the commissioner.
