Approximately €80,000 was stolen at dawn by a gang of at least six people who robbed the Postamat ATM at the Bitti post office in Piazza Fratelli Preiata. After uprooting the ATM with a bulldozer stolen from a nearby construction site, the criminals loaded the ATM into a van and fled, abandoning the construction vehicle about 200 meters from the scene.
The investigative machine is in full swing: the Carabinieri of the Bitti company, together with the specialized units of the Nuoro command, are reviewing surveillance camera footage to identify the vehicles used by the gang—including a black Fiat Punto spotted by some witnesses fleeing in the van—and to precisely reconstruct the stages of the attack.
The attack caused extensive damage to the building, just as the counter was being restocked for pension payments.
This is the first successful attack after the failed attempts with explosives in Oliena and Mamoiada in recent months.
