An expert report to evaluate whether or not Graziano Mesina's conditions are compatible with his stay in prison .
This was decided by the Surveillance Court of Sassari presided over by Giommaria Cuccuru, who appointed the coroner Antonella Rendinelli.
Mesina is being held in the Opera prison in Milan. According to Beatrice Goddi and Maria Luisa Vernier, the lawyers who defend him, the former Sardinian fugitive - 80 years old - is very ill due to his advancing age and the sedentary life he is forced to lead in prison . For this reason they are asking that he be able to serve his sentence in his home in Orgosolo or in another more suitable structure .
The Attorney General of Sassari has appointed the coroner Manfredi Rubino as its consultant, the lawyers of Mesina will do so shortly. The former Scarlet Pimpernel of Sardinian banditry will have to wait at least another three months in jail, given that the professionals will present their reports in the next hearing scheduled for February 16th .
Mesina ended up in the Milan prison in mid-July, transferred from the Badu 'e Carros prison in Nuoro, where he was imprisoned following his capture in December 2021 after a year and a half on the run.
He had been untraceable since 2 July 2020, when he had gone into hiding shortly before the carabinieri knocked on the door of his home in Orgosolo to notify him of the final sentence of the Cassation which sentenced him to 30 years (later recalculated to 24) for criminal association aimed to drug trafficking .
In December 2021, he was tracked down by the del Ros carabinieri and arrested in a house of his friends in Desulo .
