The Region has taken a hard line on the disaster at the Genna Luas landfill —managed by Portovesme srl —where a massive spill of sulfuric water has reached fields and waterways. The Regional Department for Environmental Protection has expressed "grave concern" over the events in Iglesias and the Sulcis area, warning of potential "repercussions on the environment, water supplies, and economic activity in the area."
The extent of the spill and its potential impact on the local area are still being assessed. Analyses and technical assessments are underway by the relevant authorities, while further sampling and monitoring of the affected waterways and downstream from the site are planned to closely monitor the situation. "The Sulcis region can no longer be a place where environmental costs are unloaded and damage is accumulated," stated Councilor Laconi. Under current environmental regulations, the operator is obligated to intervene immediately to contain the spill and secure the site, preventing further damage. After the initial emergency measures, a complete characterization of the area will be conducted to verify any contamination and, if necessary, determine remediation measures.
Laconi also emphasizes that the area in question has already "paid a very high price in terms of health, the environment, and development opportunities. Those who operate in this area must do so with full respect for the citizens and the rules. Delays, omissions, or underestimations will not be tolerated. Safety measures must be immediate, complete, and transparent. The Region will be relentless in demanding compliance with obligations and in protecting a community that cannot continue to endure the consequences of irresponsible decisions."
The Region will provide technical support to the Municipality of Iglesias and the Province of Sulcis Iglesiente in managing the emergency and preparing urgent measures to protect the population and the territory, working in full coordination with local authorities. It remains understood that the responsibility for immediate safety measures and compliance with authorization requirements lies entirely with the site operator, with no possibility of postponement or mitigation.
